8th international transplant and cellular therapy course - DR. WONG TIEN GEN

I would like to thank MSH for providing me with a grant to cover my travel and accommodation expenses for participating in the 8th international transplant and cellular therapy course in Barcelona. It was a 3 days course from 8 September 2023 to 10 September 2023. I am fortunate that my case report was selected for oral presentation at the course.

My flight from KL to Dubai was delayed, so was the connecting flight from Dubai to Barcelona. So, I took the opportunity to visit the Metropolitan city of Dubai, and of course the Burj Khalifa. I reached Barcelona in the afternoon of 8 September 2023, and unfortunately due to the flight delayed, I had missed the first half of the first day of the course. Regardless, I was grateful because I am still able to present my topic at the course on time in the evening.

Topics that I attended for the first day was GVHD treatment, and infectious complication post-transplant. The treatment of respiratory complications and respiratory viruses post-transplant still left me feeling helpless

The second day’s topics were interesting. Topics that drew my attention are transplant in autoimmune diseases, and transplant in thalassemia and sickle cell anemia.

Professor Selim Corbacioglu from Germany had really given me a different perspective about transplant in thalassemia and SCD.

The third day was about CAR-T cell therapy. I find it difficult to understand, especially when the speaker talks about the technical parts. This is a reminder that I need to equip myself with greater knowledge about emerging therapy.

After the course, I have another day which I plan to tour around Barcelona. Unfortunately, I fell sick, I had my day in the hotel, and I departed back to KL the next day.

As a conclusion, this course is an eye opener for me on different practices among international stem cell transplant communities. I shall continue to work relentlessly to improve myself and provide better care to patient who require stem cell transplant.
