Message from the President, Malaysian Society of Haematology

On behalf of the Malaysian Society of Haematology, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all the participants of the VIIth Malaysian National Haematology Scientific Meeting which is going to be held at Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur from 10-12 April 2008.
I would like to thank the organizing committee headed by Dr Chang Kian Meng who has worked hard to put everything together. The theme of the Meeting is ‘Innovative Strategies Towards Improved Outcomes’. I hope we would all benefit from the scientific sessions. Despite the world is 'flat' in this digital age, there is no substitute to face to face contacts to foster friendship and exchange ideas. It is my fervent hope that someday the National Haematology Scientific Meeting will evolve into a bigger regional meeting such as that involving the ASEAN countries to serve the growing needs of these countries.
For our foreign guests, ’Selamat Datang’, ‘Huan yin’ or Welcome to Malaysia. I hope you could take some time to take glimpses of Malaysia –the melting pot of Asian cultures. Enjoy the good food, fabulous shopping and the culturally diverse people in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.
I wish everyone a successful and fruitful meeting.

Dr Ng Soo Chin
President, Malaysian Society of Haematology

Message from the Organising Chairman, VIIth Malaysian National Scientific Haematology Meeting

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 7th Malaysian National Haematology Scientific Meeting organized by Malaysian Society of Haematology.
Over the last ten years there has been tremendous progress in the understanding of pathophysiology of many haematological diseases and giant strides have occurred in the laboratory in the design of tools to distinguish biologic entities, ascertain diagnoses as well as monitoring of disease response. In the arena of treatment, targeted therapies like imatinib and rituximab have improved not only the survival of patients but also the quality of life. It is then only apt that this year’s theme is “Innovative Strategies Towards Improved Outcomes”.
The organizing and scientific crew has worked tirelessly to bring forth an exciting programme and it is indeed an honour and privilege for us to be able to invite so many eminent and expert speakers who are willing to share their experience and thoughts.
We continue to stress on the importance of science in this meeting. Also the clinicians, pathologists, nurses, trainees, scientists and laboratory technicians, pharmacists and transfusionists are all gathered in a similar platform.
We continue the time-honoured tradition of having the Bosco lecture and to our minds, there is no candidate more deserving than Professor Emeritus Dr S K Cheong to deliver the address on Global Issues in Stem Cell Research.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the crew members without which this meeting would not be possible. I wish all the participants – both local and overseas an enjoyable meeting and a pleasant stay in Kuala Lumpur.

Dr Chang Kian Meng
Organising Chairperson
